New fish pass at Denwick Upper on the River Aln23 August 2020
We are delighted to have opened up the new larinier fish pass at Denwick Upper in time for the smolts coming downstream in the next few weeks. WL Straughan and Son have done a great job keeping people on site 2m apart and sourcing materials in challenging circumstances. There is more work to complete. There are a pair of dippers currently nesting where the eel pass is due to go…! Also, the steel fabricator for the debris deflector is currently furloughed and we are still looking at options for coping stones to go along the tops of the walls. However, we hope to complete these last few items in the next few weeks. The project is funded by the Water Environment Grant (European ERDF funding) administered by the Environment Agency. We are also extremely grateful to the Northumberland Estate for their support with the eel pass element of the project. We plan to start work on the next passes on the Aln in July at Denwick Lower and Filberthaugh.
